Project Title:

St Bigseach's Church, Kilbixy, Co Westmeath

Client:

Mullingar Union of Parishes

Project Details:

St Bigseach’s Church of Ireland church is exquisitely built of ashlar stone and has been rated of national significance by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). Recent research has shown that it was built in 1799 to designs of James Wyatt, a significant figure in the development of the Gothic Revival style. Collapse of the roof in 1960 resulted in reuse of the chancel end only, leaving three bays open to the sky. Lotts Architecture were engaged as conservation consultant to guide the design for reroofing of the entire structure to accommodate a community hall alongside the reduced church space of 1960, with a new side doorway in the ashlar stonework. (Lead consultant: R. Kenny, structural engineer)
