Over the past 12 years Lotts Architecture has carried out 5 garden surveys commissioned by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). The survey involved recording on site of approximately 1,000 demesnes, submitted in an NIAH database.

The initial project included formulation of the survey methodology, preparation of a special NIAH site survey sheet and assistance in development of the format of the database. The Historic Gardens Inventory project received a Europa Nostra award for research in 2009.
